Golden Age
In contrast to Russian poetry, in which the Golden Age was dated to the first third of the 19th century, in the art of painting its intensity continued unabated for almost the whole 19th century. By this term, theorists indicate a most fruitful and prosperous time when the national art by the skill level becomes not only able to compete but also to influence the world culture. Such was the Golden Age of Russian painting.
The so-called Golden Age in Russian painting was marked mostly by romanticism. This is a period of landscapes seeking to capture fleeting – the changing images of nature at sunset, its vagaries reflected in the game of clouds and more. A moment, caught in the net of painting, as the desire for eternity. The basis of the romantic landscape is the subjective-lyrical human being experience of the world. Such a landscape is an inverted portrait of the artist himself.
Genre painting, which at this time takes on signs of early or poetic realism, most often depicts quiet “spiritualized private life” or, conversely, emphasized dramatic, tragic scenes of everyday life. The portrait is dominated by academic focus.
The “discovery of the people”, which has been going on since the beginning of the century, has also left an imprint on the Golden Age. Travellers from cities travelled through the imperial vastness, got familiar with people, noted its folklore, traditions and, most importantly, surprisingly found their common roots in people.
Among the most recognized masters of the period: Ivan Aivazovsky, Viktor Vasnetsov, Vasily Vereshchagin, Ivan Kramskoi, Julius von Klever, Konstantin Makovsky, Alexei Harlamoff and others.
