Alicja Kwade is a contemporary Polish-German visual artist. Her sculptures and installations are concerned with the subjectivity of time and place. Kwade is a Berlin-based artist.

Kwade was born in Katowice, an industrial city. Her father was a cultural scientist, while her mother was a gallery owner and conservator.

Work
Kwade uses chemical methods to change everyday materials like wood, glass, and copper in order to investigate the ephemerality of the physical world. Her works frequently include reflection, repeating noises, and erroneous doubling to create immersive and sensory places that challenge viewers’ perceptions of reality. Kwade noted in a 2013 interview with ArtReview magazine, “I’m intrigued with the borderline between science and skepticism.” Everything in between. Mr. Houdini is one of my greatest inspirations.”
