Filippov Konstantin Nikolaevich (1830 – 1878) – a battle painter, who also depicted genre subjects.

In the years 1847-1858 As a volunteer he studied at the IAH in the class of battle painting with B.P. Villevalde. For student work, he was repeatedly awarded medals: in 1851 – a small silver “for the depiction of military scenes”, in 1852 – a large silver for the painting “Cossacks at the well”, in 1853 – a small silver for the painting “Cossacks fighting the convoy from the French in the campaign of 1812 “.

In the same 1853 he was sent to the headquarters of the Russian army on the Danube front of the Crimean War of 1853–1856. He was under the Russian army in the Crimea, was a direct witness to the defense of Sevastopol. One of the few artists who reflected the Crimean campaign in their works. In 1856 he was awarded the medal “For the Defense of Sevastopol.” Some full-scale sketches of the artist were published in 1854–1858 in the journal “Russian Art Leaflet” by V.F. Timm.

In 1858, for the painting “The military road between Sevastopol and Simferopol during the Crimean War” he was awarded the IAH gold medal, received the title of class artist of the 1st degree and the right to a retirement trip abroad for a period of five years.

In 1859–1864 – pensioner IAH. He lived first in Warsaw (1859), where he worked on battle compositions commissioned by the governor of the Kingdom of Poland, then in Rome (1860–1862) and Paris (1862–1864). He created a number of genre paintings, studies and watercolors.

In 1864 he traveled to the Caucasus for “art classes” under the Caucasian governor. In 1865, for the painting “Flight of the Bulgarians from the Danube after the retreat of Russian troops from under Silistria” he was awarded the title of academician.

After the retirement period he lived alternately in St. Petersburg and Yalta. He took part in exhibitions in the halls of the IAH (1851–1864), the Society for the Promotion of Artists (1864), and the World Exhibition in London (1872).

In the years 1877-1878. during the Russo-Turkish War he was a military artist of the Transcaucasian Front and a special correspondent for Niva magazine.

Filippov – one of the largest masters of battle painting in Russia in the mid-19th century, a representative of academism. He created mainly multi-figure compositions, distinguished by a strict, but somewhat schematic construction and restrained color. He proved himself to be an excellent draftsman, who was able to bring genuine animosity into his work, and a watercolorist, sometimes achieving greater expressiveness of color in the watercolor technique than in oil paintings.

Filippov’s works are in many museum collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the Artillery Museum in St. Petersburg and others.
