“Voices of Love” – project by Arsen Savadov opened this weekend at the M17 Contemporary Art Center in Kiev. The large-scale exhibition project, supported by Adamovskiy Foundation, attracted over 1,200 visitors during opening weekend! The audience saw two premieres at once. The major premiere is the voice-over performance of “Voices of Love,” in which Marilyn Monroe was revived by the author and her concert in Korea in 1954 was now on the military bases of the Donbass. The second media project, Diary of the Drowner, first shown to viewers at the M17 CAC, was created back in 2013, but was postponed for 7 years due to the socio-political “absurdity”.
Arsen Savadov is a key figure in the Ukrainian New Wave, which origins date back to 1987, when the era of publicity was proclaimed, and art was set free from censorship. In 1987 Arsen Savadov, together with George Senchenko, created the work Cleopatra’s Sadness, which was noticed abroad and paved the way for the new Ukrainian art to the world context.
The most famous photography series of the artist – “Donbass-Chocolate”, “Fashion at the Cemetery”, “Book of the Dead”, “Collective Red” – were widely discussed at the time and still don’t leave the viewers without questions. These series can also be seen today in the M17 CAC.
In addition, the program of events at CAC provides curatorial guides, lectures and meetings discussing the work of Arsen Savadov. «Giving the keys” to understanding contemporary Ukrainian art is one of the main aspirations as the creator of “new mythologies”, which defines itself the author, as well as the Center and Adamovskiy Foundation. So keep an eye out for the events.
