Widhopff David Osipovich
(1867, Odessa – 1933, Saint-CIair-sur-Epte, near Paris)

David Osipovich Widhopff is the Russian painter and graphic artist, painter of decorative art. Education he received in 1880s at the Odessa Art School and the Munich Royal Academy of Arts. For several years the artist has taught drawing in Rio de Janeiro. In 1890 Widhopff settled in Paris, where continued his studies at ZH.L. Jerome and A. V. Bugrov stidios. A long time, the artist has worked with popular periodicals, in particular with the “Courrier Fransaise” (“Courrier Fransais”), where he created reporter sketches and caricatures. He was chairman of the salon of Painter-humorists. In addition, D. Widhopff was drawing books, in 1910, he created the illustrations for the Spanish edition of “Karamazovy Brothers” after Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Periodically, D. Widhopff drawings were published in the Petersburg journal “Ogonek”.

After 1910 Widhopff turned to easel painting and drawing, which became dominant in his later works. The artist has exhibited his works in Paris in the Autumn salon, in the salon of Independent and the Tuileries. In 1912 took part in the exhibition of Russian art in the gallery “Devambez”.

In the 1920’s – 1930’s Widhopff along with the works of easel paintings created interiors, creating numerous decorative panels. He worked with the factory “Tapestry of Beauvais”, for which he has created numerous sketches. The artist has successfully held a number of personal exhibitions in Paris galleries “Blot”, “Bernheim”, “Veil” and others.

Portrait genre had a very special place in the artist’s creativity. His stunning portraits did not only disclose the inner world of characters and models, but also show the typical images of their era.

D. Widhopff’s creativity has received recognition in European art circles. The artist was awarded with the row of awards including the Order of the Legion of Honor. He is also known as a major collector of old French folk art.
