Zommer Rikhard-Karl Karlovich
(1866-1939)

Rikhard-Karl Karlovich Zommer is well-known Russian painter and graphic artist. He created daily and battle scenes, views of architectural attractions of Turkestan, landscapes of old districts of Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara, which enjoyed popularity among collectors and art lovers. Ethnographic-genre focus of R. Zommer paintings native them with the works of such painters as V. V. Vereshchagin, J. F. Tsionglinsky, L. Dmitriev-Kavkazskiy.

Art education he received at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, where from 1884 till 1893 he was free visiting student. For student works he repeatedly received medals. In 1886, he was awarded with the small silver medal, in 1890 with the small and large silver medal, in 1891 with the large silver medal. In 1893 graduated from the Academy with the title of class artist of 3rd degree.

In the late 1890’s – early 1900’s the artist worked in Central Asia, traveled to the Caucasus, visited Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. R. Zommer is the author of numerous nature paintings, as well as of a number of graphic works mainly ethnographic genre. In his works he depicted as a domestic, and battle scenes, as well as the views of monuments and landscapes of Turkestan old districts of Tashkent, Bukhara, and Samarkand. The artist has participated in exhibitions of the St. Petersburg Society of Artists, the Society of Russian watercolorists, Society artists-Kyiv citizens and others. He was also a founding member of the Tiflis Society of Fine Arts. Since 1894 R. Zommer exhibited his works at exhibitions of the St. Petersburg Society of Artists, the Society of Russian watercolorists, Autumn Exhibitions in the halls of the Academy of Arts. Personal exhibition of the artist was held in Tashkent in 1915.

Paintings by R. Zommer distinct ethnographic precision to details, in which the artist depicted the characteristic images of the characters, costumes, types of housing, architecture, everyday life and manners of different nations. In his painting, as in many other masters of the turn of XIX-XX centuries, combines features of realism and impressionism.

Nowadays works of R. K. Zommer are in the collections of the State Russian Museum, Omsk Regional Museum of Fine Arts, the Tula Regional Art Museum, State Museum of Art of Azerbaijan, the Museum of the History of Culture and Arts of Uzbekistan in Samarkand, National Art Museum of North Ossetia, Museum of Fine Arts of Uzbekistan, and many other private collections.
